UMA
Uma was born into a Hindu family, the youngest of seven children. She has four older sisters and two older brothers and in 1996 she married her husband, an arranged marriage by her parents. In 1997 she had a first and only child, a baby girl. When she was pregnant her husband had blood ken at the hospital and it was at this point that they found he was HIV positive. He had contracted the disease from another woman. AT this point Uma (and therefore the baby) tested negative however she took penicillin as a precaution, as the doctors advised. Uma suffered persecution from her mother-in-law’s house, most of all who blamed her for her son’s disease. Uma tried to explain that he had tested positive, not her but her mother-in-law was determined to blame her, a hurt which still remains fresh in uma’s mind After her child was born, however, uma’s health worsened and after taking another blood test in a private hospital was found to be HIV separated from her daughter and husband. Our staff met her here and brought her to the hospice.
Her daughter who was then studying in a hostel has just joined her mother Uma after a great effort through this office and the so long ailment she had concerning her daughter has come to an end. She was also tested and found HIV positive. Her husband’s whereabouts in pune is still unknown. Uma likes being with Pact and would like to stay in the hospice but if her husband came for her she and her daughter would go with him.

SELVI
Selvi, born into a Hindu family of 6 girls, she was the 5th. Her family is a fisherman’s family and 10 years ago her husband came to ask her father for marriage. This man had already been married to her older sister and they’d had a son. However after selvi’s older sister ran way from her husband leaving her son behind, he came for Selvi instead. With no communication to her, selvi’s father accepted this proposal so in rebellion Selvi left her home and went to work as a servant in another house.
As time went by her proposed husband repeatedly beat her sister’s son and at the age of 11, selvi’s nephew died. Unexpectedly one day her family called her back and as she arrived they treated her with royalty, giving her a nice bath, nice food and putting flowers in her hair. All the relatives were present and she relaxed, enjoying their company. Half way through the day her proposed husband arrived asking her why she wouldn’t marry him. She explained all the awful things he’d done and as she refused once again, her family held down and placed the thin rope around her neck, which signifies the unity of marriage in Indian culture. After some time however, selvi’s husband began to beat her, accusing her of loving other men other than himself. Three years ago she left him and they took one son each. She supported herself and her youngest son by picking up rubbish on the streets then selling it to shopkeepers. After some time however she became so sick she was admitted to the TB hospital and after discovering she was HIV positive, was brought t the hospice by our staff.
AT present she has committed her life to Jesus, as she put quite bluntly: after praying to her Hindu gods they didn’t help her and after accepting Christ her life as much better. Thankfully both sons are not HIV positive and her youngest has been placed in a hostel to study. She wants to also put her older son in this hostel and yet her husband wants her to return to him. As he is not very ill he wants her to go back onto the streets picking up rubbish so that she can support and look after him. She refused, as she is now happy at the hospice and wished to stay.

AMSAVILLI
Born into a Hindu family in 1962, at the age of just 18, her parents arranged for her to marry her cousin. His profession was as a driver and he was a very tall, scary man. His mean face and military-like appearance made Amsavalli much afraid of him. She begged and fought with her father to cancel the arrangement but he determined to see them married. Her husband, during their marriage was often very sick and after he was admitted to a hospital in Pondicherry he was found HIV positive. He neglected to inform Amsavalli of this disease, which he carried and when she then became ill, refused to admit her into hospital in fear that she would find out the truth. Even when she had blood tests he would hide the results, and five years ago he died.
They had three children: two girls of 18 and 14 and one boy of 13. After their father’s death their mother then became more ill and was admitted into the local hospital in Tambaram, her blood test showed she was an HIV positive. For three years, she has been taking various medications in the TB hospital and recently she brought to the hospice by our staff. Whilst in the Tb hospital she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and her children, who have all tested HIV negative, are with her Hindu mother in Kattumannarkudi. She believes strongly that God will let her live to see her children settled in the future.

MAMATHA
Mamatha is a little angel born to Mrs. &Mr. Babu whose origin is kerala. Mamatha’s father Mr. Babu was a professional tailor in Mumbai. There he carried virus in him as the result of wicked life style. His frequent illness however didn’t permit him to stay no longer in Mumbai. At last he migrated to his hometown. After a few days, he had been to a private clinic with his wife and Mamatha to take some treatment. Having understood their case through some illegal sources, a particular press daily cunningly indulged in a conspiracy by placing an article about their viral infection with a family still photograph. This published article took its momentum in his family circle and they pulled up socks to excommunicate them till the breath. This bitter event of excommunication rippled an impact shock to Mamatha’s mother that sacked her to death. The sudden demise of his beloved wife was unbearable that instigated Mr. Babu to commit suicide. Fortunately, a few kind-hearted people rescued and restored him and kindly advised not to stay in hometown any longer.
This is how Mamatha lost her mother two years ago. After the demise of her mother, her father Mr. Babu with Mamatha landed in Chennai seeking a suitable job for their survival. Though Mr. Babu is basically a born rich, this social disease had discarded him from his entire beloved circle and to waive the claim of all his inheritance for the betterment of Mamatha. Mamatha was staying with his father for a few months where she couldn’t be given proper care. At this juncture, our staffs met both Mr. Babu & Mamatha in hospital. When Babu explained his inability on providing a proper care to his daughter, it really burdened us to do needful.
Subsequently, It was decided to harbor Mamatha in hospice. She is the first child to come in this hospice. As there was none to show the mother’s love after her mother’s demise, since the day she came here she began to taste mother’s love through our staff. We provided a suitable job to Mr. Babu for his daily bread in one of the coffin undertakers. As on this date, there is no known where about of Mr. Babu and few information at hand that ratifies that he is no more. Her health is gradually going down day by day. She is very fond of singing songs and praying during morning &evening prayers. Her active display in hospice makes others merry that frees them from mental agony. She is really a learning template for such calibers. Our sincere prayer to the Lord is May Him grant a little more extended life to this little angel.
